This crunchy mama’s treatment for Cold Sores

Growing up it was pretty normal that every once in a while Dad would have a Cold Sore or Blister on one side of his lip. When he did he’d take great care not to kiss us or to share cups or chapstick. In turn, this now makes me a carrier of the HSV-1 virus, also know as the Oral Herpes virus.

And so, every now and then I am blessed with a Cold Sore flare up typically brought on by one the following situations:

  • Lack of sleep
  • Poor nutrition
  • Stress

This past week I could feel my body crying out for better nutrition. As it turns out my daily Circle K run for the X-Large Dr. Pepper WASN’T good for my body. (insert audible face-palm here). So after one too many trips for my tasty Sugary soda my body finally said enough and planted a Cold Sore right on it’s usual spot–my lower right lip.

Which had me rushing to my medicine cabinet to help restore the balance.
Now it would be simple to say that a bit of L-Lysine does the trick and leave it at that, however we all know by now that the body is much more complicated than that. There is no ‘one quick fix’ for any issue, as the visible issue is typically only a manifestation of a much larger and multi-layered issue. So, here’s what I grab for in my medicine cabinet whenever I’m dealing with a Cold Sore flare up…

  • L-Lysine supplement, 1 gram x3 a day while treating the flare up
    • I’ll usually do a 1 gram supplement x2-x3 a week on-going with my seasonal allergy pill as well.L-Lysine supplement, 1 gram x3 a day while treating the symptoms.
  • Milk Thistle to help with liver support
  • Magnesium supplement
  • L-Lysine topical ointment, apply hourly until the flare up subsides
  • Seasonal Allergy Pill, which I take daily and also recommend to help block histamines and allow the body to fight one less battle as it’s working to heal
  • Stress relieving oils—I like the Past Tense blend from DoTerra
