The twins are officially 29 weeks gestation, and one week old. The doctors keep talking about ‘adjusted ages’ saying that because Rhys and Avery are preemies they will be referred to by their ‘adjusted’ ages for at the least first year. Meaning when they’re 6 months old they won’t be held to the same development standards as ‘normal’ 6 month olds because their ‘adjusted’ ages are really only 3 months old. It gives them a bit of a break and causes a lot less worry and stress on mama, I’m sure.
Their first week in the NICU wasn’t too shabby. They went from full intubation (tube down throat and breathing for them) to a simple cannula (the same oxygen flow you and I would get if we went into the hospital). They went back on CPAP machines yesterday morning and seem to like the little extra flow of oxygen. They’re gaining weight and are on breast milk only – up to 19ml per feeding! The doctors are keeping them on the same schedules and basically the same amounts of everything and keep commenting ‘they sure are twins!’
Yup, they sure are.
