Why is rice cereal typically baby’s first food?

We decided earlier this week to start the twins on some ‘first foods’. They’re almost 5 months old now (crazy!) and show all the standard ‘signs’ for being ready, plus we are hopeful it will help them sleep a bit longer through the night. A mama (and daddy) can dream!

So… I ran out to the store and grabbed some rice cereal, and only then did the question hit me ‘why is rice cereal typically baby’s first food?’ I did a bit of research and it sounds like it mostly comes down to a cultural tradition rather than any scientific/nutritional reason. Well, like any good California native we fully plan on their next solid being avocado, maybe even some Salmon. Mmmmm, healthy fats.

What are some of your first food faves or traditions?
